What a judgement-free conversation feels like

Most of us edit ourselves before we speak, because we're afraid of how it will sound. Here's what changes when no one is judging, and how to find a conversation like that.

How judgement shows up

It's rarely someone saying "that's wrong". It's smaller than that:

  • A pause, or a look, halfway through your sentence
  • "Why would you do that?"
  • "You're overthinking it."
  • Advice before you've finished
  • Your story turning up later, in a conversation you weren't part of

After a few of those, you learn to start with "I know this sounds stupid, but…", or to leave out the part that matters most.

Why it's hard with people who know you

The people closest to you have a stake in your life. Your family has hopes for you. Your friends have opinions about the people you're talking about. Some things involve them directly. They can't hear it without reacting, and you can't say it without thinking about how they'll react.

That isn't anyone's fault. It just means the people who love you most aren't always the easiest to be honest with.

What judgement-free actually means

  • No lecturing. You're not told what you should have done.
  • No shock. Whatever you say, the other person stays steady.
  • No sides. They're not on your side or anyone else's. They're with you.
  • No consequences. What you say doesn't follow you home, to work or to the next family function.

When those four are true, people stop editing. They say the real thing, often for the first time, and hearing it out loud is usually what helps.

How to find it

Sometimes a friend can be that person, if you ask: "I don't need advice, I just need you to hear this." Sometimes it's easier with someone outside your life altogether, who has no history with you and no reason to judge.
