You don't need advice. You need to be heard.

You start saying something hard, and halfway through someone says "You should just…". You stop talking. Here's why that happens, and how to get what you actually came for.

Why advice arrives so fast

People who care about you want to help, and fixing feels like helping. There's another reason too: listening to someone you love in pain is uncomfortable. Advice ends the discomfort sooner, for both of you.

The trouble is that most of the time you already know the advice. You know you should talk to your manager, or sleep earlier, or stop texting him. Hearing it again doesn't help. It just tells you the other person has stopped listening.

What venting is for

Venting isn't complaining for the sake of it. When you say something out loud, in full, to someone who lets you finish, a few things happen:

  • You put words to something that was only a feeling.
  • You often find out what you think halfway through saying it.
  • You feel less alone with it, because now someone else knows.

None of that needs the other person to say anything clever. It needs them to stay quiet long enough.

How to ask someone to just listen

Say it before you start: "I don't need a fix. I just need to say this out loud." Most people are relieved to be told. It takes the pressure off them to have an answer.

If they slip into advice anyway, it's fine to say "I know, I just need to get the rest out first."

What a good listener does

  • Lets you finish, even when you go in circles.
  • Asks questions instead of giving answers.
  • Doesn't turn it into a story about themselves.
  • Doesn't judge, and doesn't act shocked.

When there's no one to ask

Sometimes the person you'd ask is the one the story is about. That's what SuperSocial is for: a voice call with a real person, checked by our team, whose only job is to listen. Calls are never recorded and hosts never see your phone number. ₹6 a minute, no subscription.

SuperSocial is peer listening, not therapy. In crisis or feeling unsafe? Call Tele-MANAS 14416. It's free and open 24×7.
